I have a friend who looks like Jesus, and so we call him the Messiah.
In the spirit of things, he wrote the following Eight Suggestions for
his disciples to follow (commandments being such a strong word, and 10
being too many to keep track of). Note that the Messiah is an atheist,
no less. Therefore ...
Here you go guys, the 8 Suggestions according to Toe-Knee-The Messiah
1) DON'T WORRY--Nothing in the world is worth getting an ulcer over. If
you're getting stressed out over something, like a paper or studying for
a test, chill; go take a nap or read a book. For things you can't
control, like already done tests or asking people out, you shouldn't be
worrying about it anyway. Que Sera, Sera, to quote the Spanish; wigging
out ain't going to help.
2) GIVE IN TO APATHY--I've been quoted as saying it in the Book of
Quotes by Disciple Fischer, and I live by it. If you don't care about
it now, you aren't going to later. (See forthcoming section on changing
majors)
3) DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO--Yours should be the only opinion that counts
in your life. If somebody isn't going to like you because of the
clothes you wear or the music you listen to, or the religion you
believe, they ain't worth it. (See forthcoming supplement on religion)
Corollary to #3--Respect what other people do and don't impose
what you're doing on them.
4) DON'T GROW UP--At least mentally. Kids live on instincts and go with
them. That's the way it should be. Your first thought is usually what
you want the most, so do it. (see #3) Save logic for balancing your
check book.
Note--I'm not saying to act immature. You can act mature and
still think with childlike passion.
5) LEARN ALL YOU CAN AND WANT TO--Knowledge is the key to power, not
money or charisma, and any knowledge is useful. Even seemingly some
things help win Trivial Pursuit or finish crossword puzzles. I believe
in the old Renaissance Man, liberal arts, Jack-of-all-Trades, mode of
learning. You should know a little about everything that affects your
life: from physics to anthropology. Even creative skills, like writing
or art, at least make life m ore interesting for yourself and those
around you.
6) LIVE EVERY DAY TO ITS FULLEST--It's always seemed silly to me that
people celebrate the gift of life only once a year. Every day, minute,
and second you're getting older and using that gift. You've only got a
limited time on this planet so instead of celebrating birth-days,
celebrate a birth-second or birth-nanosecond, so that way you're always
doing something special.
7) HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR--This will help with almost every other rule.
Laughing reduces stress, makes learning more fun, hones instincts, and
makes life more exciting in general. Remember to be able to laugh at
yourself, as well as others.
8) APPRECIATE NATURE--It's been here long before us, and will outlast us
by a long time. It's the power of the world, because it is the world.
Take a woodland hike, visit a zoo, recycle some cans, flip through a
Penthouse, whatever will make you see and appreciate its beauty more.
Now remember the above are ONLY suggestions. I don't even follow all of
them all of the time. They're just supposed to be guidelines that are
easily fit into whatever moral or religious system you may already have.
More installments to the Confrisciaism philosophy will be on their way,
probably after spring break and I get all of my work done. Always feel
