LSC Movies for the week of Oct 1 to Oct 3

Fri.	Oct 1	The Lavender Hill Mob (1951)	[???]	10-250	7:30
Our First Friday series honors Audrey Hepburn in one of her very first
films. She stars with Alec Guinness who portrays a mousy bank clerk who
plans and accomplishes a $3 million gold heist along with his cronies
from The Ladykillers..

Fri.	Oct 1	What's Love Got to Do With It	[R]	26-100	7 & 10
Tina Turner has definitely had it all--romance, fame, music, dancing, and
physical abuse. She started out as a teenager with an incredible voice
who was swept off her feet by charismatic Ike Turner, becoming his lead
singer and then his wife. At first they were the perfect couple, but
when Tina's stage presence started getting her more notice than Ike, his
jealousy led to trouble. Starring Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne.

Sat.	Oct 2	Hot Shots! Part Deux [PG-13]	26-100	7 & 10
Spoofster Jim Abrahams directs this sequel where Topper Harley returns
to rescue his ex-commander, being held by the evil Saddam Hussein
somewhere between Iraq and A Hard Place. And that's not all you'll see!
DISCOVER the mysterious secret in Ramada's past, FOLLOW the amazing
moveable mole, GAWK at Charlie Sheen on steroids, CHEER as the Energizer
Bunny gets wasted and whose shoe is that really??? You know you want to,
Just Deux It.

Sun.	Oct 3	Glory [R]	10-250	7 & 10
Matthew Broderick plays a young white colonel commanding the pioneer
all-black 54th Massachusetts infantry during the American Civil War. The
talents of Morgan Freeman and Cary Elwes are joined by an Oscar-winning
performance from Denzel Washington as the 54th fights not only to
preserve the Union but also to win the acceptance of their
comrades-in-arms. No videotape can reproduce the power, horror, and
glory of a Civil War battlefield portrayed on the big screen.

rlcarr (Richard L. Carreiro):

[_Providence Journal_, 27 Sept, p. B3]

``Furthermore, if Congress approves the [health reform] plan,
the administration wants to move quickly to put it into effect.
The White House wants to issue emergency rules without the usual
  opportunity for advance public comment.''

Gee...afraid of what might happen if you let people actually think
about the charade you're trying to foist on us, Slick? How
courageous.

sgw (stephen g. wadlow):

Althea
------

I told Althea I was feeling lost
lacking in some direction
Althea told me about scrutiny
and that might need protection

I told Althea a treachery
was tearing me limb from limb
Althea told me "Now, cool down boy,
settle back, easy kid."

You may be Saturday's child, all alone
and moving with a tinge of grace
You may be a cloud in the varying crowd
or just another pretty face.

You may meet the fate of Ophelia
sleeping and the chance to dream
honest to the point of recklessness
self-centered to the extreme

Ain't nobody messing with you, but you
Your friends are getting most concerned
Loose with the truth, baby it's your find
Baby, don't get burned

When the smoke has cleared she said,
that's what she said to me
I only want a bed to lay your head
and a little smypathy

There are things you can replace
and others you can not,
the time has come to weigh those things
this space is getting hot
You know this space is getting hot

I told Althea I'm a roving son
and I was born to be a bachelor
Althea told me, OK, that's fine,
so now I'm trying to catch her.

I can't talk to you without talking to me
we're guilty of the same old thing
Thinking a lot about less and less
and forgetting the love we bring.

sorokin (Jessie Stickgold-Sarah):

Consider Icarus, pasting those sticky wings on,
testing that strange tug at his shoulder blade,
and think of that first flawless moment over the lawn
of the labyrinth. Think of the difference it made!
There below are the trees, as awkward as camels;
and here are the shocked starlings pumping past
and think of innocent Icarus who is doing quite well:
larger than a sail, over the fog and the blast
of the plushy ocean, he goes. Admire his wings!
Feel the fire at his neck and see how casually
he glances up and is caught, wondrously tunneling
into that hot eye. Who cares that he fell back to the sea?
See him acclaiming the sun and come plunging down
while his sensible daddy goes straight into town.
