bamf's quote asks about a time when "emotions didn't... run so continuously
at breakneck speed" and then proceeds to blame it all, essentially,
on the increasingly convenient 60's.

I wonder whether the 1960's magically 'caused the astonishing bloodshed
cruelty and madness of Bloody Kansas and the border states during
the War between the States?  Or the lynchings that dotted the south (mostly)
thru roughly the first half, or the labor massacres of first couple of
decades, of this century.

The U.S. has often been a spectacularly violent place to live.
Moderately well-to-do people had a relatively quiet time of it for
awhile, and the fogeys among them may have lost their sense of
perspective.  Teevee makes things scarier and more immediate.  History
is the best cure for Millenium Fever, but the cure rate isn't too good,
some people, after recovery, miss the righteous high.
