Newer news:

Still can't dunk with two hands. On week six of heinous death leg
workout program. Upon completion, I will be able to neither dunk nor
walk, and will have lower legs the size of volleyballs.

I'm still willing to talk disk/labor with anyone at the SIPB who
thinks something can be worked out.

Not so new news:

The Peter principle is again in effect. I am now the head of the Unix
consulting group at Rice. I am supervising people.

Responsibilities are being heaped upon me, to see how much work it'll
take to break me. Of course, compared to Unified, this is cake.

Projects:

Slowly paying off my debt to MIT. Will I be class of 89, or something
on the other side of 2000?

Finish the X version of titan. Yes, I'm still working on it.

Learn some languages. Spanish, Russian, Japanese. Maybe a continental
language (other than German). Taking Japanese in the fall.

Beat 19 diabolical computer players at expert skill level in a small
dense random universe in Spaceward Ho! (version 3.0.1). Okay, so this
isn't all that likely.

Get olc/olta and Zephyr built and up on the local Sun shop (this time
with official backing), and slay the current problem tracking system
(it runs on CMS, ugh!) residing on the ES/9000. Gotta love bureacracy.
This project is stall pending the investigation of "alternative"
systems that cost big money. C'est la vie. Man, I hate VARs.

The local Kerberos war is over. V4, V5, or Sandia? Keep in mind we're
talking about a production system that needs to work for three
thousand or so users. Sandia has been overthrown, we're going with V4
until V5 comes out of beta (and how long will that be?).

Thesis? What thesis?

"The advancement of science and scientific knowledge."

We're discussing the new Defiant-verse (yes, poetry that will FIGHT BACK!):

>War Dancer: A stranger shows up one day dressed like the Mayan god of Rock
> 'n' Roll. He says that he's here to save the world or, if he
> can't, destroy it.

Yeah, yeah, whatever. I'm just glad to see that someone, somewhere, has
finally got a writer with a good sense of cultural history to write a comic
book. I mean, how long has a story idea like the Mayan god of Rock and Roll
been lying around, being unexploited? With any luck, this will be the
"Thor" of the Defiant-verse, and we'll be meeting the Mayan gods of
Internal Combustion, Chlorestoral, and Morse Code in the first few issues.
And wait 'till you see the troubles when the Aztec god of Country &
Western comes a'gunnin' for the War Dancer!

"It's only rock and roll but I like it, like it, yes I do."

10-4, Good Buddy

Mounce Brady Jackson, known on the CB channels in Southern California as
Big Moose, died in an auto accident and received a CB funeral. The
Reverend George A. Wood of the Lemon Heights Baptist Church of Orange
eulogized the departed as an example of how "the Great Broadcaster plugs
you into his power and modulates through you," and consoled mourners
with the though that Big Moose was not really gone --- "He's just out of
range."
