Subject: Ridiculous stuff - The new name for "Alpha"
Date: Wed, 09 Sep 92 12:56:14 -0400
From: Alejandro Caro <acaro@whopper.lcs.mit.edu>
I got this from a friend at Digital... it's pretty funny.

Subject: Ridiculous stuff - The new name for "Alpha"
OK, here's the scoop. Digital makes this fast processor and the
engineers code name it Alpha. That was cool until it came time for the
product folks to name it. They picked the name "ARA", for "Advanced
Risc Architecture", after many weeks of study. About 2.3 hours after
this brainchild of a name was released, someone in Israel wrote that
this is a homophone of "Shit" in Hebrew. Back to the drawing board.
The Engineers fought back, saying that it should just be named "Alpha",
because that is kind of cool and all, and why do we need another TLA
(Three Letter Acronym) to describe it anyway??? This was good enough
for several months, until someone else figured out that Digital simply
does not have enough cash to sue everyone else using the name "Alpha"
into submission. So, back to the drawing board.
This is the latest of the "Alpha" product names. They sent a four page
memo describing how to properly use the New Name, "Alpha AXP". Nowhere
in this memo did they say what "AXP" stood for. Then this came...

in liverpool on sunday no traffic on the avenue
the light is pale and thin like you, no sound, in this part of town
except for the boy in the belfry he's crazy, he's throwing himself down
from the top of the tower. like a hunchback in heaven
he's ringing the bells in the church for the last half an hour
he sounds like he's missing something or someone that he knows
he can't have now and if he isn't i certainly am.
homesick for a clock that told the same time
sometimes you made no sense to me
if you lie on the ground in somebody's arms
you'll probably swallow some of their history.
and the boy in the belfry he's crazy he's throwing himself down
from the top of the tower. like a hunchback in heaven
he's ringing the bells in the church for the last half an hour
he sounds like he's missing something or someone that he knows
he can't have now and if he isn't i certainly am.
i'll be the girl who sings for my supper
you'll be the monk whose forehead is high
he'll be the man who's already working spreading a memory all through the sky
in liverpool on sunday no reason to even remember you now
except for the boy in the belfry he's crazy, he's throwing himself down
from the top of the tower. like a hunchback in heaven
he's ringing the bells in the church for the last half an hour
he sounds like he's missing something or someone that he knows
he can't have now and if he isn't i certainly am.
