The characteristic property of hallucinogens, to suspend the boundaries between
the experiencing self and the outer world in an ecstatic, emotional experience,
makes it possible with their help, and after suitable internal and external
preparation...to evoke a mystical experience according to plan, so to speak...
I see the true importance of LSD in the possibility of providing material aid
to meditation aimed at the mystical experience of a deeper, comprehensive
reality. Such a use accords entirely with the essence and working character
of LSD as a sacred drug.
- Dr. Albert Hoffman, the discoverer of LSD

I share the belief of many of my contemporaries that the spiritual crisis
pervading all spheres of Western industrial society can be remedied only
by a change in our world view. We shall have to shift from the materialistic,
dualistic belief that people and their environment are separate, toward a
new Consciousness of an all-encompassing reality, which embraces the
experiencing ego, a reality in which people feel their oneness with animate
nature and all of creation.
- Dr. Albert Hoffman

Deliberate provocation of mystical experience, particularly by LSD and related
hallucinogens, in contrast to spontaneous visionary experiences, entails
dangers that must not be underestimated. Practitioners must take into
account the peculiar effects of these substances, namely their ability to
influence our consciousness, the innermost essence of our being. The history
of LSD to date amply demonstrates the catastrophic consequences that can
ensue when its profound effect is misjudged and the substance is mistaken
for a pleasure drug. Special internal and external advance preparations
are required; with them, an LSD experiment can become a meaningful
experience.
- Dr. Albert Hoffman, the discoverer of LSD

I believe that if people would learn to use LSD's vision-inducing capability
more wisely, under suitable conditions, in medical practice and in conjunction
with meditation, then in the future this problem child could become a wonder
child.
- Dr. Albert Hoffman, the discoverer of LSD

dmciotti (Denise M Ciotti):

"And so I think what a miracle it would be if this miracle which
man attends eternally should turn out to be nothing more than these
two enormous turds which the faithful disciple dropped in the bidet.
What if at the last moment, when the banquet table is set and the
cymbals clash, there should appear suddenly, and wholly without warn-
ing, a silver platter on which even the blind could see that there is
nothing more, and nothing less, than two enormous lumps of shit. That,
I believe would be more miraculous than anything which man has looked
forward to. It would be miraculous because it would be undreamed of.
It would be more miraculous than even the wildest dream because anybody
could imagine the posibility but nobody ever has, and probably nobody
ever again will."

                     ... ... ... ... ...

"Heretofore I have been trying to save my precious hide, trying to
preserve the few pieces of meat that hid my bones. I am done with that.
I have reached the limits of endurance. My back is to the wall; I can
retreat no further. As far as history goes, I am dead. If there is some-
thing beyond I shall have to bounce back. I have found God, but he is
insufficient. I am only spiritually dead. Physically I am alive.
Morally I am free. The world which I have departed is a menagerie. The
dawn is breaking on a new world, a jungle world in which the lean spirits
roam with sharp claws."

I was rather surprised to see William F. Buckley, Jr. campaigning
heavily in a debate for legalization. He is really a funny guy when
put in the right setting -- one person in the debate asked if the
government (assuming the government sold the drugs itself) would
purchase cocaine from foreign sources or [enter extreme shock,
disbelief, and revulsion in the voice mode] *produce it ourselves*.
Buckley looked at the guy like he was a bug for a moment, then
replied, "Why, whatever is cheaper, of course."
