bjaspan (Barr3y Jaspan):
DEAR MISS MANNERS -- I believe that it is proper to use the word
``please'' when one is asking someone to do something -- for example,
``Please pass the potatoes.'' My mother-in-law seems to think that it is
perfectly acceptable to do without the ``please'' -- just ``Would you
pass the potatoes?''
GENTLE READER -- Does anyone ever answer your mother-in-law by saying,
``No, as a matter of fact, I wouldn't''?
Or -- considering that the person of whom such a bald demand is made
happens to be armed with a plateful of potatoes -- worse?
Miss Manners certainly hopes not, because it would be rude. But she
acknowledges the temptation. She even found her own spotless mind
drifting off toward the possible gestures that could accompany the
simple words ``Sure -- here.''
Those who lobby to drum out our pitifully few remaining forms of
politeness should consider well what they are doing. In a world where no
one acknowledged the polite necessity of being obliging to anyone else,
no favors would be asked, but probably none would be offered, either.
Does your mother-in-law really want to be at the mercy of the lucky
person nearest the food, who has no incentive for yielding to her
demand?
