Excerpts from the April 1992 "Dateline -- World Jewry", the newsletter
of the World Jewish Congress:
* Hitler Speech
A Thousand Oaks, California, elementary school student, wearing a
khaki uniform with a swastika armband and a fake mustache, recently
won an annual oratory contest with a speech that portrayed Hitler as
having been mistreated by Jews.
After complaints by Jewish parents, the school district changed its
policy to allow speeches only on historical figures who have had a
positive influence on society.
* Old Lie
The head of the Federal Chamber of Civil Engineers in Austria, Walter
Lueftl, has resigned amid public uproar, after saying that the mass
murder of Jews in the gas chambers of Auschwitz was impossible.
In a five-chapter treatise entitled "Holocaust - Belief and Facts",
Lueftl wrote that mass muder with the poison gas Zyklon B "could not
have happened."
* No Speech
Hundreds of chanting demonstrators chased French right-wing
pseudo-historian Robert Faurisson from a square in Stockholm,
preventing him from delivering a speech.
Faurisson, who has described the Holocaust as a "myth," was invited to
Sweden by Radio Islam manager Ahmed Rami, once jailed for six months
by a Swedish court for airing excerpts from Adolf Hitler's book "Mein
Kampf".
* Apologies
Tourism officials in St. Moritz, Switzerland, have apologized to the
Jewish community for an offensive item in a recent questionnaire.
The tourism office, in asking residents to list space offered for
rent, inquired whether the apartment owners would rent to Jews.
* Principles
Britain's Lord Goodman has stopped acting as legal adviser for the
Dutchess of York, following her private vgisit to the Everglades Club
in Florida, which openly bars Jews and blacks.
Lord Goodman is understood to have been deeply disturbed by the visit,
and to have felt he had no choice but to react on an "issue of basic
principle."
* Hate Mail
A British Labor Member of Parliament who gave evidence against the
Dowager Lady Birdwood is among several people who have subsequently
received anti-Semitic hate mail and anonymous abusive phone calls.
Lady Birdwood was convicted for distributing and possessing
anti-Semitic leaflets.
