aras (Sheldon Robinson):

Matt Groening, creator of "The Simpsons",
speaking on fans of "The Simpsons":

"I have this comic strip called 'Life In Hell',
which runs in 200 newspapers, and I get a lot of
fan mail from generally articulate, literate people.
And now I walk down the street and I see people
wearing Simpsons T shirts who I'm afraid might
beat me up, so the quality of fans has broadened.
The people who are my fans now frighten me."

     - from "Newsweek" magazine, June 18, 1990, page 13

_- -_- -_ My philosophy, more or less:

``
Q: Why are we here?
A: Because we can be here.
Q: Why can we be here?
A: Well, the laws of the Universe are just right to permit it.
Q: Why?
A: Well, you wouldn't be here to ask me that if they weren't.
Q: True. But I'm not really satisfied with that. How does God and Soul
    come into it?
A: Well, God doesn't seem to have a hell of a lot to do with anything.
And as for the soul, well, people seem to like the idea, but there's
no reason to believe there is such a thing.
Q: So what's our purpose? On Earth, I mean, in the Universe?
A: Purpose? That never really enters into the picture. You're just
asking why we're here in another way. And the only reason is that
it is possible for us to be. Listen, if you mix up a whole bunch
of cow manure in a pot and let it sit there and simmer for five
billion years, you may be surprised to find an advanced civilization
has developed out of the cow manure. Moreover, the civilization is
no less grand for its humble origins. In fact, it is grander.
Q: I'm going to have to think about this.
''

(I wrote this myself, so don't tell me it's stupid. I'd be hurt. :-)

It's not always swell

'Cause it hurts like hell.

                               PROGRAMS ARE OCEANS

                          Programming is like swimming
                                deep in the ocean
                           subject to unseen currents
                               that can tumble you
                         into a beautiful hidden garden
                                or a jagged cliff

                                   Diving down
from the top of a program
                                  to go through
                           some deeply nested function
is like leaving the daylight behind
                              and forcing yourself
                            down, down to the depths
                                    to watch
                              some self-fluorescing
                                 misshapen fish
gape its huge mouth of razors
                                     at you

When the writing is going well
                         it's like swimming effortlessly
                              thorough clean water
creating the oceans as you swim
watching as the eels and kelp
                             and sharks and dolphins
                               and everything else
                               pops into existence
to either side, above and below

                           The other good programmers
                              are fellow sea people
                               down there with you
                         the same strong Atlantean race
                             but usually seen hazily
                         through the currents that cross
                                   between you

                              The programmers that
                                couldn't hack it
                                  are there too
                               the haunted bodies
                               of drowned sailors

                                   Your goals
                                  in this world
                              are to keep swimming
                                  keep creating
                            clean ocean (i.e., code)
                                 in front of you
                          enjoy the odd majestic scenes
                                 you've created
                             and not get eaten alive
                            or flung into sharp rocks
                                     because
                                   you werent
                                paying attention

                            PROGRAMS ARE SPIDER WEBS

                         Programs are like webs because
there are so many possible paths
                              from any given point

                                 But programming
                              is like walking a web
                             in many other ways, too

                               Some of the threads
                               are relatively safe
                            if you keep your balance
                              but others are sticky
                                 dangerous traps

Some threads in programs are triggers
if you touch them at all
                           a large nasty spider comes
                                   rushing out
                               moving very quickly
                          in ways you don't understand
                                    and then
                                     SPLAT!
                                You're paralyzed
                                    and hung
                                   upside-down
                                   to ferment

                                      Also,
                         some threads are more important
                                   than others
                                   If you cut
                            too many of these anchors
                          the whole program will tumble
                             down into a sticky mess
                                 and you may be
                                 Caught inside!
A mess like that can never be untangled
                             it can only be rebuilt
                                and then only if
                                you kept track of
                                   everything

                                 Your basic goal
                                 is to memorize
the web (that is, the code)
                                   so you can
                               move where you want
                                      in it
                        Stay away from nastiness triggers
                            dont cut too many anchors
and dont get stuck to the thing
                            if it starts to collapse

                            PROGRAMS ARE MAGIC SPELLS

                         Programming is much like living
                            in a fantasy world where
                               magic really works

                               Programmers create
                             something from nothing
                                    every day

                                But it's not easy
                               to work this magic
                              these code creatures
                                 are as slippery
                             as they are intangible

                           Programmers have to master
                        arcane languages and instruments
                              They work long hours
                           in front of glowing objects
                                 that are either
                              barely under control
                           working surreptitious evil
                             or raging in rebellion

                            Programmers tend to work
                          in isolation, as magicians do
                            Their sense of isolation
                                  is magnified
                          by a pulsing dangerous thrill
                                     a sense
                               that at any instant
                                  they might be
                             sucked permanently into
                             an alternate dimension
                          that bears little resemblance
                               to the 'real' world

                                 The basic goal
                              for these programmers
                               is to keep learning
                               They want to spend
                                    infinity
                              mastering new arcana
                             without getting sucked
                                 too far out of
                                 (or back into)
                                     reality

mhbraun (Matthew Braun):

Can anybody find me Somebody to love?
Each morning I get up, I die a little, can't barely stand on my feet.
(Take a look at yourself in the mirror and cry, yeah, yeah)
Take a look in the mirror and cry, Lord, what you're doing to me.
I have spent all my years in believing you, but I just can't get no relief,
Lord, Somebody, somebody, can anybody find me Somebody to love?
I work hard (he works hard) ev'ry day of my life, I work till I ache my bones.
At the end (At the end of the day) I take home my hard earned pay
all on my own.
I get down on my knees and I start to pray 'til the tears run down from my eyesLord, somebody, (somebody) somebody (somebody) can anybody find me
Somebody to love?
(He wants help) Ev'ryday (ev'ryday) I try and I try and I try,
But ev'rybody wants to put me down,
they say I'm goin' crazy. They say I got a lot of water in my brain,
got no common sense. I got nobody left to believe. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
(instrumental)
Ooh, somebody, somebody, can anybody find me somebody to love?
(Anybody find me someone to love)
Got no feel, I got no rhythm, I just keep losing my beat.
(You just keep losing and losing.) I'm O.K. I'm alright, (He's alright:||)
Ain't gonna face no defeat.
I just gotta get out of this prison cell,
One day I'm gonna be free, Lord.
Find me somebody to love, Find me somebody to love, Find me somebody to love,
Find me somebody to love, Find me somebody to love, Find me somebody to love,
Find me somebody to love, Find me somebody to love, Find me somebody to love,
Find me somebody to love, Somebody, Somebody, Somebody, Somebody, Somebody,
Find me somebody, Find me somebody to love.
Can anybody find me, Somebody to love.
Find me somebody to love! Find me somebody to love!
Find me find me find me find me.
