[...] I have between 30 and 50 coffee mugs and only 3 coffee drinkers.
Recently I talked with someone from (I think) Los Alamos who said he
had several *hundred* coffee mugs. He told me that he kept them in
the break area of hios department, and when a vendor was coming to
visit, would select several mugs from the vendors *competitors* and
place them out in the "Public mug" area.
At a strategic time, all parties would break for coffee, the vendor
reps would see the competitors mugs, and often enough, a few of the
vendors mugs would show up in the mail a few days later. Once they
got an entire CASE of fancy gold-rimmed mugs from one three letter
company...

Why is the sky blue???
When an electromagnetic wave impinges on an atom or molecule it interacts
the bound electron cloud. At frequencies below or above the resonating
frequency, the elctrons of the atom or molecule vibrating with respect
to the nucleus may be regarded as oscillating electric dipoles and as
such will reradiate energy at a frequency coinciding with the incident
light. This is known as scattering. The amplitude of the oscillator or
the amount of energy removed from the incident light increases as the
frequency of the wave approaches a natural frequency of the atom.
For low-density gases (such as our atmosphere) the interatomic
interactions are negligible, absorption is insignificant and the
reradiated or scattered wave will carry off increasingly more energy
as the driving frequency approaches a resonance. When the atom's
natural frequencies are in the ultraviloet and the incident light is
in the visible, as the frequency of the light increases, more and more
of it will be scattered. In other words, sunlight streaming into the
atmosphere from one direction (in the visible) is scattered in all
directions by the air molecules which have natural frequencies in the
ultraviolet. The red end of the spectrum will be for the most part
undeviated while the blue or high-frequency end will be scattered.
The high-frequency scattered light will reach the observer from many
directions and the entire sky will appear bright and blue. But what
about sunsets? When the sun is low in the sky, the light must pass
through a great thickness of air. The blues and violets are scattered
sideways much more strongly than the yellows and reds which propagate
along a line of sight from the sun. A dude named Rayleigh worked all
this stuff out ages ago, and hence this effect is called Rayleigh
scattering. If you understand this, you can also explain why the smoke
from a cigarette appears blue while exhaled smoke appears white, why
grains of salt and sugar, fog, clouds, paper, powders, and polluted skys
are white. Then again, maybe not.
