<jym@remarque.berkeley.edu>:

=o= I once had a friend/roommate who decided he didn't have
any personality. He decided to get one by reading the afore-
mentioned _Preppy_Handbook_. I am not making this up.

=o= He bought Izod shirts and topsiders. He learned how to cook
lamb. He gave up Bruce Springsteen for James Taylor. He even
got himself an Old Money girlfriend named Beth, whom he redubbed
"Buffy." I swear I'm not making this up.

=o= In due time I was too lower-class for him, of course. He
went down to Newport to meet Buffy's parents. He was rejected
(his skin was too *gasp!* yellow). It became him and Buffy,
preps against the world. It was quite tragic.

=o= Lisa Birnbach wrote her book as a parody of preppies, and
was aghast to find that preppies all over the country were using
it as an actual handbook. Let this serve as a warning for all
you would-be satirizers out there.

less than a punch in the nose.
