I scored pretty high on the Perl Purity Test, and maybe I'm glad.
Perl is the ugliest tool-for-the-job that I've ever seen.
But here's a question that's not on the test. Have you ever used Perl
to kill a man?
I have. And this makes the whole Perl Purity Test irrelevent.
Whatever my answers to its questions may be, I can't claim I'm a Perl
virgin any more.
It's a long story, and a deeply personal one. I've kept it secret for
months, but it's been eating at my mind, late at night, in dreams and
restless sleep. My therapist says telling the tale helps unburden the
soul, so I thought, why don't I tell it to the net? Ten thousand
listeners should lighten my spirit considerably.
But I don't think I'm ready for that yet. I still flinch inwardly
whenever I see "while(<>)" or "s///eg". Someday, maybe, I'll be able
to look back at everything that's happened, and cry, and even laugh a
little. I haven't cried since, and I haven't written another Perl
script since.
Perl is a trap. Maybe I could have saved his life, but I was too busy
saving my own.
Keep Perl at a respectful distance, or it will devour you.
