The TWA quote reminds me of flying Empire Airlines into Syracuse, NY
(the airline's headquarters).  At 5:00pm and again at 6:00pm, planes
would be at Syracuse to go to six or eight different cities even though
the airline had only two gates.  The planes would just park next to the
terminal.  The passengers would go down the stairs, out the door, and
would be greeted by an attendant who would ask "Where is your
destination?"  The passenger would name a city and the attendant would
say something like "Third plane on the left."

The airline had other touches of rural New York--for example the
in-flight snack was an apple.
