The spade lead is devastating as it takes away your only lead to dummy. Since
it is impossible to win more than three diamonds tricks without losing a
trick, you must find a way to keep the lead in dummy so you can run the clubs.
This requires four jettison plays. Win the first trick with the ace of spades
and cash the queen of spades to jettison the ace of hearts. Next, cash the
king, queen, and jack of hearts, and jettison the ace, king and queen of
clubs. The lead is still in dummy and you can now run the club suit and make
the grand slam. Note that if the ten of clubs did not fall under the jack,
the contract could still be made if the diamonds ran.
