Mr. John T. Kohl
Project Athena
E40-300

Dear Mr. Kohl:

I have your letter and the correspondence that you have had with Robert
Keating, the Superintendant of Streets, for the City of Cambridge. We
have been in close touch with Mr. Keating over the last several years as
we have planned the development of new buildings along Ames Street. As
you have noted, the condition of Ames street has been deteriorating due
to a number of events, not the least of which are construction projects
which MIT has initiated in this area.

It has been our considered judgement that given the fact that we will be
undertaking heavy construction that will impact on Ames Street over the
next two years, it is in the City's best interest, as the owner of the
street and MIT's best interest, as the agent that would have to provide
the money for its repair, if we live with the street during this period
so that when the project is finished, we can insure the street will be
properly rebuilt and that it will be done in a manner that is convenient
and economical for both the City and MIT. In the meantime, I hope that
you will be able to use alternate routes to your destination in E40 and
as always, we are grateful for your interest and any suggestions you may
have about improvements on the campus.

Sincerely yours,

O. Robert Simha
Director of Planning
