celine (Robert Fullmer):

``Son, I just want you to know: life is a black, sucking, vortex of
anguish and despair, filled with brief moments of false hope and empty
joy, all the while dragging you inevitably closer to final, absolute,
and eternal death.''
                                                 --Homer Simpson

Life just isn't a joyride for everyone. If this fact doesn't bother
you, great. If it does, you can try to change the world (or try to
forget about the suffering). But you can't change *life*, the human
condition, without changing what it is to be human.

And what is it to be human? In one respect, it is to have the
ability, and to be unable (for many of us) to never use it, to
objectify your own existence to a perspective that brackets your own
ego out of consideration. From this view, we are specks, tiny spots
on the tapestry of time, dust in the wind. Some people are angered
when they hear life talked about in this way. "What about my
projects?", they ask. "What about *me*?" No one wants to be reminded
of mortality, and just how small their place seems to be in the larger
picture. The ability to recognize this insignificance is the
cornerstone of the absurdity of the human condition.

So now what? Perhaps we'll evolve into something which doesn't have
this problem at some point. Perhaps someday we'll no longer be able
to objectify the perspective from which we view the universe. Perhaps
we'll just forget.

Thought for the Day:

If Western religions are right, the population of hell is going to be
predominated by asains in numbers that would astound us.
