bjaspan (Barr3y Jaspan):

Ah, distinctly I remember, t'was in the bleak December,
And every separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the 'morrow, vainly had I sought to borrow,
From my books, surcease of sorrow.

jcbourne (Juliet C Bourne):

When the spell is broken, if only for a brief moment, and you are no
longer mesmerized by the fire, turn away. Do not look back. Walk away
and continue your vigil. Though the cold of the damp night seeps into
your clothes and clings to your skin, do not return to the fire. You did
not listen to the warning before and you became mesmerized by the fire.
You put your hand into the fire and did not care. Now the spell is
broken. Do not return to the fire, for you shall become again mesmerized
and careless. Whatever warmth it offers is accompanied by danger for
you; the nymphs and fairies that you see, though only illusions, shall
draw your hand once more into the fire. Better to forget the warmth of
the fire, put it out of your mind. You are free. Forget that you are
cold and damp, for dawn shall be here in its own sweet time.

Thoughts for the day:

I finished the draft of my thesis on Saturday and now I'm working on
corrections!!!

My sister passed her orals and turned in her thesis. Now she can get
her Master's in Music (at the age of 36). Unfortunately, I don't have
a ticket to actually be at her graduation... her 5 kids got them...

To sleep or not to sleep. That is the question....

tytso (Theodore Y. Ts'o):

How to be Unhappy
=================

Sit down quietly in a place where you not likely to be disturbed.
Relax the body --- and begin to think about _yourself_. It does not
matter very much what you actually think, as long as it is about
yourself. Think about yourself, and everytime your thought wanders to
something higher, bring it back gently but relentlessly.

If possible think about the past. Think over all of the mistakes you
have ever made, going right on back to childhood. Think of all of the
foolish things you have ever said or done. Think over all of the
oportunities you have missed and the time you have wasted. Especially
think of all the occasions upon which you have been badly treated.
Consider carefully the various injustices of which you have been the
victim and think how much better off you might be in various ways
today if only other people had only behaved properly in days gone by.
Remind yourself vividly of the unkind things have done to you and
rehearse the incidents in detail, feeling as angry or hurt as you
possibly can at each recollection. Even if a particular person has
never actually offended you, realize that he might have done so if he
had the chance, and tell yourself that he probably has talked about
you anyway.

Think about your body and wonder if your age or your job or the
climate isn't beginning to tell. See if you cannot discover a pain or
ache somewhere; you probably can if you search long enough.

Think about business or finances as gloomily as possible and even if
they are going well now, insist that this is probably too good to
last.

In any case, think about _yourself_; that is the main point, and if
you keep this up faithfully for fifteen or twenty minutes, there can
be no doubt about the result. You will have attained your goal.
