Ulysses S. Grant:
"Bold in conception, self-reliant, demonstrating by his acts that 'much danger
makes great hearts most resolute,' fertile in resources, combining the
restlessness of a Hotspur with the patience of a Fabius, it is no wonder that
he should have been looked upon as the wizard of the battlefield."
- General Horace Porter

A plan, huh? I don't know about THAT.
"The best laid plans of mice and men...," you know.
Umm. . .how about this: I plan to have fun and to be happy.
And to make others happy, too!

			  NEW USE FOR PLUNGERS

		   Reprinted without permission from
	_Chemical_and_Engineering_News_ October 29, 1990, p. 56.

Physician Keith Lurie and his colleagues at the University of California
Medical Center, San Francisco, report cardiac resuscitation by means of
a toilet plunger (_Journal_of_the_American_Medical_Association_, Oct. 3,
page 1661). The patient was a man who was taking medication for
coronary artery disease.

One evening while watching television with his family the patient passed
out. His son immediately tried cardiopulmonary rescuscitation, but was
poorly trained in the technique and had no luck. He switched to manual
chest compression, but without result. Then he recalled that his mother
had obtained excellent results with a plunger six months earlier.
Securing the one in the home, he plunged his father's chest for about 10
minutes. By then the patient had begun to move and breathe on his own,
and the paramedics arrived.

Everything came out okay, Lurie and his co-workers report. The son was
so happy with the plunger that he recommended that one be placed next to
each bed in the Medical Center's coronary care unit. Lurie et al.
"recommended that he take a basic CPR course but had to admit that it's
hard to argue with success."

lwvanels (Lucien W. Van Elsen):

If you are part of a society that votes, then do so. There may be no
candidates and no measures you want to vote for... but there are
certain to be ones you want to vote against. In case of doubt,
vote against. By this rule you will rarely go wrong.
If this is too blind for your taste, consult some well-meaning
fool (there is always one around) and ask his advice. Then vote the
other way. This enables you to be a good citizen (if such is your
wish) without spending the enormous amount of time on it that truly
intelligent exercise of franchise requires.
	-Lazarus Long
