To the Editor:
I cannot imagine why you published ``If My Marine Son Is Killed,'' by
Alex Molnar (Op-Ed, Aug. 23).
Surely, those who join the Marine Corps understand they might have to
go to war. Surely, the parents of marines understamd this too.
Surely, also, everyone understands that in the Marines one doesn't get
to decide if one wants to go to war or not.
Mr. Molnar seems to assume that it's all right for young men to join
the corps to earn enough money for college, using the corps for their
own purposes, but it's not all right for the Government to require
these young men to fight, using these young men for the corps'
purposes. No one wants to see a child killed or maimed, but does the
Marine Corps exist simply to enable its members to go to college?
Mr. Molnar can certainly oppose United States involvement in the
Middle East. But he should not base his opposition on his son's
situation as a marine. Soldiers exist to fight. If Mr. Molnar's son
did not envision this possibility, he should not have joined the
Marines.
