celine (Robert Fullmer):
"You are old, Father William," the young man said,
"All your papers these days look the same;
Those William's would be better unread --
Do these facts never fill you with shame?"
"In my youth," Father William replied to his son,
"I wrote wonderful papers galore;
But the great reputation I found that I'd won,
Made it pointless to think any more."

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I can't change,

jik (Jonathan I. Kamens):
"Neither force, nor argument, nor opinion," said Merlyn with
the deepest sincerity, "are *thinking*. Argument is only a display of
mental force, a sort of fencing with points in order to gain a
victory, not for truth. Opinions are the blind alleys of lazy or of
stupid men, who are unable to think. If ever a true politician really
thinks a subject out dispassionately, even *Homo stultus* will be
compelled to accept his findings in the end. Opinion can never stand
beside truth. At present, however, *Homo impoliticus* is content
either to argue with opinions or to fight with his fists, instead of
waiting for the truth in his head. It will take a million years,
before the mass of men can be called political animals."
-- T.H. White, in "The Book of Merlyn"

Subject: Rush clones hack frat party Friday
"Hey mon, I didn't know your name was Alex!" -- Cheech & Chong
If you stop by DKE (next to Burton, sort of) this Friday at 4:30, you
can witness the never-to-be-repeated spectacle of Eric Ostling (best
known for his compositions for various campus musical organizations),
Gary Leskowitz (best known for having been reported dead in
_Technology Review_), and me (best known for not doing this sort of
thing) playing 45 minutes of um, shall we say "Canadian progressive
contemporary" music. I'm not sure why we're playing at DKE, but as
the Archduke said, "There it is." Hack value has been rated at 5.3,
so feel free to come, and I'm sorry I couldn't convince the guys to
play "Show Don't Tell" on such short notice.
-Paul
I'm going to regret this, I just know it...
