I think I will take next term off, since most of the Course 6

courses offered next term).

cuban (Federico A Garcia):
Memories of 6.170......
Twas the night before the demo when all through the cluster,
Not a person was sleeping, they needed all they could muster.
Many processes were hung by those who had despaired,
Because Lord Cromwell's game could not be repaired.
Like crazy they coded and debugged and clued,
yet their code remained hopelessly kludged.
Others were seized with a great desperation,
As they realized they hadn't any documentation.
And all there knew that there was a long night ahead,
As visions of abstractions danced in their heads.
When suddenly on everyone's face there appeared such a frown,
They couldn't believe it, the file server was down.
First Erato, then Theseus, and now Priam too,
Those old 750's would henceforth be taboo.
And as they saw their hope for sleep disappear
They sang in unison with sarcastic cheer:
1, 2, 3 o'clock, 4 o'clock TOOL
5, 6, 7 o'clock, 8 o'clock TOOL
9, 10, 11 o'clock, 12 TOOL
WE'RE GOONA TOOL AROUND THE CLOCK TONIGHT!!
When the clock strikes 2, 3, and 4,
We're gonna TOOL again once more...
We're gonna TOOL around the clock tonight,
We're gonna TOOL, TOOL, TOOL 'till broad daylight...
We're gonna TOOL, we're gonna TOOL tonight!!
And no sooner had ended this raucous round of merrying and jesting
Than a student proclaimed, "The server is up, I'm ready for testing!"
And as he ran his drivers and stubs, he was forced to enter debug,
Which was probably, in fact, the tool that was most full of bugs.
And he saw a message which always caused such a terror,
His uninitialized variables had caused a bus error.
He grabbed for his fifth coke and took a bite of his candy bar,
While his partner searched their code for an uninitialized var.
And after hours of searching, they finally found,
That the variable game_state had never been bound.
So they fixed it and compiled and linked; it took so long,
That, as they waited, they decided to sing another 50s song:
Blue Moon, you saw me tooling alone,
Without a line in my emacs,
Without clu code of my own.
Blue Moon, now I'm no longer alone,
I now have code in my locker,
And a debugged checkers cluster.
And as they saw through the window the rays of the rising sun,
A crowd gathered around them to see what they had done.
Up in their screen popped up their checkers utility,
Which played the game with very masterful ability.
They gave a loud cheer now that their work was all done,
As they packed their bags and prepared to go home.
And as they left the cluster, the keys in their pockets jingling,
They exclaimed, "Merry Tooling to all, and to all a good morning!!!"

Talking Your Way Out of College
(Part VIII)
Students don't always put their best foot forward at interviews, a
pivotal step in the admissions process. One young man proudly
informed William Hiss of Bates College that he had been "abducted into
the National Honor Society" at his high school, while another assured
him that "I have undergone many diverse activities in my life and have
eradicated meaning from every one."

Apple: La La LaLaLaLa La LaLaLa...
Xerox: SPLAT!
SAN FRANCISCO -DJ- Xerox Corp. said it filed a federal lawsuit against
Apple Computer Inc. seeking in excess of $150 million for unlawful use
of copyrighted Xerox software and charging Apple with copyright misrepresentat-
ion.
The Xerox lawsuit claims that Apple's Lisa and Macintosh computer software
stems from work originally done by Xerox scientists and was used by Apple
without Xerox permission.
The civil suit filed in U.S. District Court in San Francisco by Xerox
is seeking a declaratory judgment recognizing that ''Xerox is the sole
and exclusive owner'' of all copyrights on its Star software. Apple
claims ownership of software which Xerox contends includes substantial
portions of Star, according to the suit, and that has caused confusion
in the marketplace, Xerox said.
The lawsuit asks the court to direct the U.S. Copyright Office to cancel
copyright registrations for Cupertino-based Apple's Lisa and Macintosh
software, Xerox said. The complaint alleges those Apple copyrights are
invalid.
The company said its complaint also alleges that Apple ''intentionally
and purposefully concealed'' that its Lisa and Macintosh software was
derived from Xerox software.
Xerox claims that by incorporating the design and appearance of portions
of the Xerox copyrighted Star graphic user interface in the Lisa and
Macintosh and licensing others to use that interface, Apple unjustly
received royalties, license fees and other benefits in excess of $100
million that properly belong to Xerox.
The Star graphic user interface software simplifies the way computer
users select programs, issue commands and perform various functions through
the manipulation of user-friendly visual displays.
In addition, the Xerox lawsuit claims that Apple's acts constitute
unfair competition and unfair business practices that have caused Xerox
to suffer past and continuing damages. The amount of these damages is
to be determined in court, but Xerox said it believes them to be in excess
of $50 million.
Referring to the filing of the complaint, David T. Kearns, Xerox chairman
and chief executive officer, said in a release that efforts to reach
an amicable settlement with Apple including a proposal for Apple to license
the involved software from Xerox, were rebuffed.
