``Hurrah for the White, White and White!''

                            Andrew Marc Greene (amgreene@athena.mit.edu)

George Bush is pushing for an Amendment to the Constitution
prohibiting the `physical desecration of the American flag.'
Many people feel this is as it should be -- after all, we can't
have those Red-loving radicals burning the epitome of America
and complaining about our great country. No, no, definitely
not. Out with the Red!!!

And what about those other recent Supreme Court decisions, the ones
that set back the Civil Rights movement two decades? Well, says
our President, they haven't hurt the rights cause at all. But
many in the country feel differently. Twenty years ago, protesters
burned the American flag to bring this country's attention to
the murders of blacks in the South. George Bush seems to feel
that African Americans sould be singing the blues, not working
for Big Blue. Out with the Blue!!!

So what does that leave us? Our sacred flag, with its white
stripes and white stars on a field of white, of course. Is this
the America of George Bush? A homogenous, white-dominated society
where dissent -- or even differentness -- is desecration?

Think about it this Independence Day.

Despising, but not prosecuting, those who burn the flag.

I am driving to New Jersey July 2 with my brother's new car to deliver
it to him, and then I am staying in the NY/NJ area until July 9.

I cannot tell you how much I am looking forward to eight hours in a
car with my father.

The apotheosis of the pun may well be the one about the jester who
punned on every subject except his royal master. When commanded to do so, he
replied that the king was not a subject, whereupon the monarch ordered his
execution. As the poor fellow stood on the gallows, a messenger arrived with
news that the king would pardon him on condition that he would never commit
another pun. Looking at the rope coiled about his neck, the jester said, "No
noose is good noose," and he was hanged.

"When will you accept your life --
		the one that you hate?
I am sick and I am dull and I am plain
How dearly I'd love to kick with the fray
But I once had a dream and it never came true
And time is against me now,
	    time is against me now."

The following was inspired by spending more than a day attempting to
determine EXACTLY how PostScript printers do grayscaling.

(Sung to the tune of
"Does your chewing gum lose its flavor on the bedposts overnight?")

Do the pixels in the printer change their color left-to-right?
If the function says they're equal, is a random pick alright?
Do you multiply by order, or divide by inverse height?
Oh, no thanks to Adobe, I've been up all night.
