That headline won't appear. But last Jan. 19 this one did:
Rest of the Year May Not Follow January
We meant stock prices, not doom.

Journal people aren't prudes, but we're culturally conservative. That is
why our 1,000-word, front-page story in 1970 about the increasing popularity
of vasectomies never got around to mentioning what part of the anatomy was
involved in the operation or what the surgeon actually did.
And in 1980 we quoted Thomas L. Krebs, director of the Alabama Securities
Commission, as saying, ``Throwing white-collar crooks in jail is more fun
than choking chickens,'' We didn't know that the latter phrase was a
regional euphamism for male masturbation.
We're touchy about profanity, too. For years we guarded against the S-word
sneaking into print by avoiding words likely top be misspelled. We called
work shifts are factories work ``turns.'' The S-word eventually broke into
print, and it was Richard Nixon's fault. We agonized, then quoted him in
the Watergate tapes as saying, ``I don't give a s--- [ we used the actual
word then, but have since re-agonized]. I want you to stonewall it.''
....
In a Nov. 4, 1986 front-page story about the Egyptian army we temporarily
forgot our Bible and misplaced three Egyptian plagues. The next day we
amplified: ``Egypt, according to the Bible, was visited by 10 plagues.
An earlier edition incorrectly referred to seven plagues.''
