                         from RISKS DIGEST 8.57:

There was a brief period in which England and Spain were on good
terms with each other. An English admiral invited a Spanish admiral
aboard his flagship for a visit, during which he presented the visitor
with a beautifully bound copy of the English navigational tables. After
the visit the Spanish fleet sailed away and was never heard from again.
It seems the English never used their own navigational tables, knowing
them to be full of errors; they always used the French tables.
