jtidwell (Jenifer P Tidwell):

	Stopwatch in my left hand, pencil poised in my right,
	  dividing my attention between the voltmeter, the ammeter,
	  the silent tension below the Geiger counter's gentle chirps,
	  the ring of intent faces, the sparks ticking off seconds,
	    and the distant neutron counter, dead still;
	One minute forty. Voltage normal, current normal, relax...
	   -What is happening in that lead brick box? How much power
	      does it take to ignite the reaction, to blow a capacitor, to
	       destroy the fragile electrodes? What will go first?
	One fifty-six. Pencil ready, look up at ammeter (normal),
	    voltmeter (normal), neutron counter, and dear God it Moved...
	"***SPIKE!***" barks the observer. "Three hundred!"
	     "But it's down now..." "From what? Zero?" "Yeah.."
	     "God! If it happens again..." Chaos. "SHHHHHHHH!!!!"
	  Write it down! quickly, despite shaking hands; a hot chill runs
	    up to my face, down to my fingers, draining my strength;
	    watch the time!  stay calm...
	Two fifteen. Maybe it was a solar flare. Maybe it was..
	     ...who knows? but the theory was there,
	          the news stories, the chance...
		No one says the word "fusion" in the charged silence,
			but it hangs there like a star pulled to earth
			     ... this may not be it, but

						why not?
