Hi,
Well, Brian beat me to sending out email about my apple
picking trip suggestion. Since his knee-jerk reaction when I first
spoke of it was, "Sounds like you've volunteered to PC it!", I'll go
ahead and officially volunteer.
First, the date: the only weekend day I truly have free right
now during the remainder of apple season is Sunday, Oct 12, and that
may be too late in the season (already!!). If it is, I'll have to
bump it up to either Sat or Sun the 4th or 5th.
The trip comes in two parts: a roadtrip to an orchard, usually
about an hour away, and if they have the right variety of trees I can
probably convince everyone that half an hour is sufficient to collect
more apples than most of us know what to do with, altho much more time
can be spent walking around eating various (and very fresh) types of
apples and otherwise lolligagging around in the sun.
Second part: we take over a large kitchen on campus (Next
House Kountry Citchen sounds fine, with three ovens) and make fresh
apple products: pies, more pies, baked apples, applesause, more pies,
another metric buttload of applesauce, apple crumble, apple cobbler,
and for the least kitchen-inclined, probably apple flambe', too. Have
a recipe ready for your favorite apple product, and make sure you can
account for the measuring cups or other special tools (like a press if
you want fresh apple juice or cider) that you will need, because I
probably don't have enough to go around if there are many enthusiasts.
So we'll need drivers (probably an alum or two), and some form
of consensus among those interested about what day *really* is best.
I cannot make Sat the 11th, for example, nor the 18th, and the 19th
would be rude to my teammates in the championship events in the Head
of the Charles. So send me email if you are interested, and I will
start keeping track of everything.
Which reminds me...
