Please Announce at your next meeting.
How would you like to spend 15 days in a tropical mountainous village in
the Dominican Republic with 30 other APO members? APO alumna is presenting
the first international APO 'Service Leadership' training program this
summer.
What might you anticipate?
First and foremost, all APO brothers will live with individual host
families near or within walking distance to each other. Most host families
do not have electricity or indoor plumbing and they cook over an open fire.
All homes are very clean and sanitary and the families are very social,
attentive and full of laughter. Some families reside in quite remote areas
and reaching them may require crossing a river as many as five times either
by foot or by mule. The view from these homes are spectacular; large palm
trees shade the mountain and on a bright clear day you can see the ocean.
During the week, you will assist the community in a family literacy
project. For example, the Rodriguez family, who has 8 children, and the
Cruz family, who has 12 children, have already expressed -- along with more
than 100 other families -- their willingness to participate and are eagerly
awaiting to begin. Mama Cruz does not know who to read and she wants to
help her children with their school work. Her 10 year old son also does
not know how to read and write and she hopes that, as she learns, she can
teach him. In the afternoon, you will have the option to assist in a youth
volleyball or basketball program or.........you can spend the afternoon
bathing in a small waterfall.
The value of this work is immense. You'll gain leadership, program
planning, community organizational and Spanish speaking skills. You can
even register for college credit.
Furthermore, you will have a chance to form lifelong friendships, travel to
several exotic and isolated beaches, dance meringue, and experience a very
warm and giving culture.
Please register now... The dates for the program are from Aug. 4, 1997 to
August 20, 1997. We have a minimum of thirty slots and we need to fill
them quickly. Please announce this program to your fraternity. The total
costs of the program, which includes round-trip airfare, food, room and
board is $1,290. To apply, call (607)257-5236 or e-mail
ept@clarityconnect.com or visit our web site at http://www.fcinet.com/ept.
The registration deadline is June 1, 1997.
Thanks in advance for your assistance. We hope to hear from you!
