Darlene sent out a minimal set of directions, provided by the Ranger.
The following, somewhat more detailed version is based on those,
previous directions, and my memory of driving there. Hopefully the
additional detail will prove useful.
Glenn
This is how you get to Camp Squanto. The trip should take about an
hour in reasonable weather.
- Go over the Longfellow Bridge and follow signs for Route 3
South and Route 93 South. Route 3 and 93 join in Boston, and
are the same road until the far side of Quincy.
- Routes 3 and 93 separate in Quincy. Follow signs for Route
3 South.
- Continue on Route 3 South until exit 5. This is roughly 31
miles from the split. (Yale thinks there is a totem pole and
a tourist center here.)
- Take exit 5; turn right at the end of the road. You will be
on Long Pond Road. (Yale says this is route 3A.)
- Begin looking for "Myles Standish State Forest" signs. The
turn off Long Pond Road is on the right, roughly 3.3 miles
from the exit. Enter the forest. (Watch out for ice on dips
in the road.)
- From here on, there may be very small signs that say
"Camp Squanto." You will stay on hard, paved roads until
you reach the camp's parking lot.
- The road goes for 2.8 miles and forks. Take the left branch.
(The milage numbers from here on are unclear.) Ignore a side
road (fork) on the left, and continue through the next
intersection until the road ends. Turn left. The road will
fork with lots of signs to various camps.
- Turn right. Bear to the right twice, then to the left twice.
Immediately after a bridge (you might not notice this one) turn
right to go to Squanto. There is a sign here. You will be on
a twisty hilly road. Follow it to camp. (Only place it goes...)
Park in the camp parking lot.
- The ranger's cabin is visible from the parking lot; it has
a light on at night. If you arrive after 9pm, please look
and listen for signs of brothers before awakening the
ranger.
