Letter from the Editor
Hi there and welcome to the second editon of the apoc.
Not a bad turnout for an apoc, and I hope the submissions
keep pouring in. I thought I would just mention that because
I am publishing apocs regularly, the deadline is not really
a ``if you don't send it in by this date it won't get published'' rule
but rather that if articles are received by a certain date,
they will appear in the next apoc.
I am sorry that there are no quotes in this apoc, but I promise
that the next one will include them. For now, keep talking
and racking up them quotes.
Finally, the next apocrypha deadline is Saturday, the 1rst of
March, so please try to have submissions to be by then (Late
submissions up until Tuesday night will probably still get in,
but please try to submit on time).

Jeffrey

Chapter Program Planning Conference (tm)
Or ``What You are Doing this Sunday''
Gimme a C! Gimme a P! Gimme another P! Gimme another C!
Gimme a shotgun for the guy who named this thing...
This Sunday, February 23 at 5:00 pm, all brothers are invited,
welcome, and expected to join me and lots of food for the termly CPPC.
A CPPC is a meeting during which brothers talk about out plans for the
term, what the chapter is doing and where it is going, and where we
would like to see it go. It is a relatively informal forum to express
ideas and/or concerns. This term I want to talk about a number of
issues facing the chapter, such as Carnival, the retention of our new
and large pledge class of last term, interpersonal relationships within
the chpater (please do not interpret this the way in which brothers of
Alpha Chi are often inclined to do...), and anything else anyone
wishes to bring up.
There will be food. It will be cheap and debt-listable (yay
executive discretionary!) It will be served up by loving alumni and
advisors dedicated to serving you and yours. Please sign up in the
office (preferably with a ``Y,'' but an ``N'' is also useful
information...) as soon as possible so we can get started on the food
plans.
See you Sunday in the Compton Room! (26-110)
YiLFS,
Alexis L.

Upcoming Lecture at BU
Greetings APO Alpha Chi from an advisor to APO Zeta Upsilon at BU
The following announcement was distributed to APO members at BU and is
being forwarding to all of you as well. Please feel free to forward
it to anyone else who might be interested. This is one speaker you should
not miss, on a topic about which we should all be knowledgeable.
Hi everyone,
This lecture was announced at a recent chapter meeting but I want to
``personalize'' the invitation (albeit electronically) and tell you a bit
about why Elizabeth Fox-Genovese is worth hearing. Besides the lecturer
being a renowned scholar, her topic: Feminism, affects all of us and is
important to all of us, though it certainly affects women most directly.
Discussion and study of feminism and women's issues is charged with
rhetoric, politics, passion, truth and falsehood all of which impacts
everyone's lives - in the classroom, in the dorm, at home, with friends, in
the workplace etc. Fox-Genovese has just completed a new book which
explores the issues working mothers face. She interviewed women across the
country and her book is called:
``Feminism is not the story of my life'':
how today's feminist elite has lost touch
with the real concerns of women
It may be that feminism and womens' issues don't interest you much at this
point in your lives but as you date more people over time and especially as
you embark upon your professional lives, working closely with all kinds of
people, you will confront these issues. You will have to think about them
and when that time comes, you will be glad to have heard what Elizabeth
Fox-Genovese has to say.
Other books she has written:
Between Individualism and Fragmentation: American Culture and
The New Literary Studies Of Race And Gender.
Feminism without illusions : a critique of individualism
Fruits of merchant capital : slavery and bourgeois property in the
rise and expansion of capitalism
The origins of physiocracy : economic revolution and social order
in eighteenth-century France
Within the plantation household: Black and White women of the Old South
Fox-Genovese began the Women Studies department at Emory University in
Georgia and is traveling up from Emory to deliver this lecture, entitled:
FEMINISM AND THE FAMILY. It will take place Sunday, February 23, at 2:00 at
Bayridge Residence and Cultural Center, 395 Commonwealth Ave. (the building
with the crescent shape Tiffany window over the front door). It's between
Mass. Ave. and Charlesgate. I hope many of you will be able to come,
especially those of you who may be inactive precisely because you are
engaged in professional pursuits. You will find the topic more relevant
than you can probably imagine.
I'll see you Monday.

Graduating Brother Recpetion

week of June 3-6. Light hors d'oeuvres will also be served.

President, Alpha Chi Alumni Association The next APOc should be black
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
What color should the apoc be?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Apoc Should be black because there are many good reasons to make
it one specific color, as this contest will demonstrate, but black is
all the colors. :) (Or white, for the same reason....)
-Cathy
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next APOc should be...
cream with fluorescent pink polka dots and thin forest green diagonal
stripes at one centimeter intervals. (Yes. I'm back in a land that
understands that the metric system is better.) The principle reason
behind this color choice is to provide the APOcrypha editor with a
challenge at a time when really, he probably would rather be without
one. Of course, the editor only asked what colour (I'm not in America
any longer, so I don't have to tolerate misspelling - and does
misspelling have one s or two ?) the APOCrypha should be. He never
guaranteed to actually make it so. So, fluorescent because they have
to be noticeable enough for people to pick up and read and distribute,
forest green because I haven't seen a tree in weeks and cream because
I don't insist that everything be black. And all because I was sending
email to get myself on the apoc-dist list. As opposed to all because
the lady loves Milk Tray - but that is a very well know advertisement
on British TV for chocolates, so the reference is probably completely
wasted on you guys :(

The Apoc Should be grey22
From a personal zephyr from Laura Dean:
personal Tue Feb 18 1997 16:35:38
from lgdean on THE-DARK-SIDE Laura G Dean
the apoc should be grey22, because that is the
only name in rgb.txt with the number 22, and 22
is my favorite number

On a quote in the last apoc
Michael: I've never done that to a seal
Charley: Well, I suppose if you rub your
thumb over a wet seal, it would make that
noise
I volunteer at the Marine Mammal Center, where we rehabilitate seals
and sea lions. (No, not because they're juvenile delinquents, but
because they're hurt, or sick, or orphaned.) Having physically
restrained many seals for feeding and for veterinarian care, I can
reassure you that rubbing a thumb over a wet seal would only make one
noise --- the seal would bark its head off.

Wife 1.0
Last year a friend of mine upgraded GirlFriend 1.0 to Wife 1.0 and found
that it's a memory hog leaving very little system resources for other
applications. He is only now noticing that Wife 1.0 also is spawning
Child-Processes which are further consuming valuable resources. No mention
of this particular phenomena was included in the product brochure or the
documentation, though other users have informed him that this is to be
expected due to the nature of the application. Not only that, Wife 1.0
installs itself such that it is always launched at system initialization
where it can monitor all other system activity. He's finding that some
applications such as PokerNight 10.3, BeerBash 2.5, and PubNight 7.0 are no
longer able to run in the system at all, crashing the system when selected
(even though they always worked fine before).
At installation, Wife 1.0 provides no option as to the installation of
undesired Plug-Ins such as MotherInLaw 55.8 and BrotherInLaw Beta release.
Also, system performance seems to diminish with each passing day.
The features he'd like to see in the upcoming Wife 2.0 include:
A ``Don't remind me again'' button
Minimize button
An install shield feature that allows Wife 2.0 to be
installed with the option to uninstall at anytime
without the loss of cache and other system resources.
An option to run the network driver in promiscuous
mode which would allow the systems hardware
probe feature to be much more useful.
I myself decided to avoid all of the headaches associated with Wife 1.0 by
sticking with Girlfriend 2.0. Even here, however, I found many problems.
Apparently you cannot install Girlfriend 2.0 on top of Girlfriend 1.0. You
must uninstall Girlfriend 1.0 first. Other users say this is a long
standing bug which I should have been aware of. Apparently the versions
of Girlfriend have conflicts over shared use of the I/O port. You think
they would have fixed such a stupid bug by now. To make matters worse,
The uninstall program for Girlfriend 1.0 doesn't work very well leaving
undesirable traces of the application in the system.
Another thing that sucks -- all versions of Girlfriend continually pop-up
little annoying messages about the advantages of upgrading to Wife 1.0
BUG WARNING
Wife 1.0 has an undocumented bug. If you try to install Mistress 1.1
before uninstalling Wife 1.0, Wife 1.0 will delete MSMoney files before
doing the uninstall itself. Then Mistress 1.1 will refuse to install,
claiming insufficient resources.
BUG WORK-AROUNDS
To avoid the above bug, try installing Mistress 1.1 on a different system
and never run any file transfer applications such as LapLink 6.0. Also,
beware of similar shareware applications that have been known to carry
viruses that may affect Wife 1.0.
Another solution would be to run Mistress 1.0 via a UseNet provider under
an anonymous name. Here again, beware of the viruses which can
accidentally be downloaded from the UseNet.
