Hi, everyone,
I'm going to be late to the elections meeting tonight (I'll be there
about 8:30). Assuming we get through committee reports before then,
here's my report to all of you on what happened at Finance Committee
last week:
Purpose of the meeting was to decide what to do with $4000 in chapter
money that was "liberated" from our MIT student activities account
(ostensibly to pay for 60th). Result of the discussion: we decided
to look at putting some amount of money into short-term CD's, with
the amount dependent upon: (1) how much of this money we wanted to
reserve for use this "large projects" (ie Carnival), and (2) whether
MIT would allow us to keep our money in outside investments.
Since the FinComm meeting, both of these questions have now been
answered to some extent. First, we did decide to do Carnival, so we
will want to keep some of the $4000 in its current NOW account; I'd
like the Carnival committee to come up with an estimate of how much
money they think needs to be kept in that account to cover operating
expenses (my guess is about $2000). The remainder can be put into
short-term CD's; I just heard back from Residence and Campus
Activities, and they said we can put our money into CD's. We register
for CD's the same way we register for outside bank accounts. (As an
aside, we can't put our money into another kind of investment like
mutual funds or bond funds.) So, given these results, I will be
looking at CD's over the next week.
That wraps up the FinComm report; I'll be happy to answer questions
about this after about 8:30 or so. ;-)
Next point: after carefully considering all the ramifications of
running for office (in particular, AVP), I've decided that I don't
want to run for anything for next semester. The reason is that I'd
like to do something for APO that I haven't had a chance to do since
my pledge term 4 years ago: be an _Active_Brother_ who actually goes
on projects regularly. And, given what I think my schedule will be
next semester, I just don't think I'll have the time to both be an
officer and go to a decent number of projects. This concludes
my statement of non-candidacy. X-)
Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!
YiLF$,
John Hollywood
