  It's a good thing that I didn't write a candidate article yet,
because I've just decided that I will not be running for AVP in
this election. Perhaps you already are asking yourself, "Why is this?"
Well, whether you have asked or not, I have a brief explanation.

Why I am no longer running for AVP

I have a fairly good idea of what the AVP's duties are --- reserving
rooms, attending meetings, updating databases, taking minutes, typing
minutes, sending minutes, reading minutes... basically, an endless
stream of administrative fun and games. This may sound like the most
boring job imaginable, but only this sort of constant attention can
keep the "student organization" aspect of the chapter in good health.

I've thought long of this, and I am certain that I would love to be AVP.
To manipulate endless lists... to confront raging bureaucrats in their
own lairs... These are among my fondest dreams. For me, this has the
fatal attraction as long grungy calculus, and all-night Babylon 5 marathons.
And, even if I should happen to tire of these things after only four
months, then at least I would be cured of these unnatural desires.

Yet, I am not running for AVP. The reasons for this are fairly simple.
I do not expect to be hosed next term, but I would like to reserve time
for other things. I have found that being an officer can get in the way
of PCing a project, and I want to PC a major project or fellowship event
next term. Also, I don't feel at all guilty for withdrawing my candidacy,
since there is an army of well-qualified candidates, all eager to leap
headlong into administrivia. In the fall, you can expect to see me running
for AVP once again, with renewed vigor and strength.

YiLFS,
  Michael
