Alexis C. Lewis's SVP Candidate Article

Hello all! Thank you for taking the time to read another long
email... I'll try to be brief as I imagine I'll have to repeat myself
next week. I am running for SVP.

I want to be SVP because I think that I have a lot to
contribute, and this would be a good reason for me to be around all
the time. (Not that I'm going anywhere, I just think it would be nice
to have an excuse to be around all the time.) There are a few things
I think the chapter will need to address next term, and I would like
to be a part of it. One of these things in on-campus service.
I know that on-campus service has been discussed a lot, and
that everyone thinks it is "a good idea." But I would like to take it
a step farther than carnival and blood drive (which I think are faboo
projects, by the way!) I would like to see some type of year-round,
ongoing project that can involve many other student groups and that is
highly visible on campus. This would serve to increase our visibility
on campus (and perhaps increase membership), and would provide a
project nearby that a brother or pledge (or anyone) could work on
whenever they had time. I know this sounds like a tall order, but I
think we can pull it off!
One idea I had for such a project is recycling in the student
center. This came up at servcomm earlier this term, and we decided
that we have neither the time nor the manpower to be able to insure
that recycling gets done every day. But I think recycling drink
containers is important enough that it does need to get done every
day, and I think there are enough people on campus who are interested
in recycling that we could get the help we needed. I know there are
many groups on campus interested both in community service and in
environmental issues, and while of course I cannot guarantee that they
will help, I anticipate cooperation and hope that we can foster
relationships with these groups. I will spare you the details of my
grandmaster plan in this article, but please ask me about it if you
want to know! (You don't necessariy need to ask me about it at
elections, though...) Anyway, if I am not SVP next term, look for me
in the role of RecycleComm!
There are about a million other things running around in my
head right now, and I made some promise about being brief, so I will
try to summarize. Saturday morning projects = good. Saturday
afternoon projects = very good. Sunday projects = good. Lots of
projects = good, more projects = better. Maintaining (Developing?) a
relationship with community service chairs of fraternities and
sorrorities = lots of projects with lots of people = good.
As for the technical stuff, I think I will do a good job
(obviously, or I wouldn't be running) and I think I have enough
experience with the chapter to be able to concentrate on my job. I am
always open to suggestions from everyone, and would rather see
everyone contributing than act as the designated "woman in charge."
(I am, though, ready for the responsibility of being in charge if
that's how it turns out) I expect to have frequent and regular
meetings of Servcomm.
As for my workload, there are only two more classes I need to
take before I graduate, but since I have a whole year before I
graduate, junior/senior pass/fail will be my friend. That boils down
to 2 course 3 classes, a 9-unit hass, and something else really easy
because I am tired of living in lab. My other commitments are very
flexible. Oh, and I may take a pottery class.
So that is me, thank you for reading this far. Let it be
known that I will not be treasurer next term, no matter what, because
the bylaws prevent it. :)

YiLFS,
Alexis L.
