Hi Alumni & Friends of AX,

   [Everyone: Bcc:ed to apo-actives; apo-alumni; apo-alumtracker; apo-annou=
nce; apo-admincomm; apo-advisors]

William is aware of The Tech's request & is working out how to proceed.

As President, he is the one to speak for AX, and lead the remaining student=
s in making decisions.
I'm sure he'll find Yale's input valuable, and will keep the alumni posted =
as he needs to.

I remind everyone that AXcoAPO is still a student activity.
I suggest we alumni trust the students members to deal with this & closing =
AX down. =20
Helping them as they ask for help.
E.g. by coming to this Saturday's Doodle organized work session.

YiLF&S, Len

Subject: Re: [The Tech] Request for interview on APO conclusion

Hi William,

The closing of AX is now public information, and some thought should be giv=
en to possible consequences:

In your last message, you reported that we would have use of 415 through t=
he coming academic year, but that MIT didn't know what was happening with u=
s. Now they do and it seems unlikely they will be willing to have a signif=
icant student activities space occupied by a non-functioning organization f=
or very long. We may need a plan for what we do if they want 415 cleaned o=
ut much sooner.

I recommend that you, or someone you might designate, meet with Mr. Gandhi =
and use this opportunity to have The Tech come to our aid. There should be=
brothers on some of these lists who once had influence there who might giv=
e us some help with this.

The message that ought to be conveyed has three prongs.

The first is how an active APO chapter contributed to MIT student life when=
the Chapter had sufficient membership: Brothers manned the baggage check-i=
n and R/O Office, so often the first several students a newly-arrived fres=
hman would meet were brothers. The first draft for the accessibility map i=
n the Infinite Corridor was done by AX. I know you have fielded a question=
about Book-X. UMOC and Big Screw brought the community together. At one =
point, we even shoveled snow from passageways. Brothers reading this shoul=
d feel free to add items to the list.

The second prong should note that an APO chapter's ability to provide servi=
ces to its campus, as well as the wider world, depends on having a healthy =
membership. At this point, try to draft The Tech into publicizing events p=
lanned for the fall to revitalize AX. It would be really useful to have so=
me concrete items to mention that might appear in editions of The Tech appe=
aring during Rush. If this will require some time to consult with Section =
and/or the other chapters who have been recruited to help, see whether Mr. =
Gandhi will give you the time to do so.

The third prong is something we might pioneer on behalf of National: State =
a belief that face-to-face communities are at least as valuable as on-line =
virtual ones, and that the two can live together in parallel. Learning how=
to be a leader, how to work together, etc., might be mentioned.

One last point: Despite what I just wrote, it would have been my responsib=
ility as an adviser to see to it that you don't shirk your academic respons=
ibilities. Please give them the attention they deserve.

YiLFS,
--Yale

Good evening APO exec,

I am a reporter for The Tech, MIT=92s undergraduate student newspaper. I am=
writing an article about the recent announcement that the MIT chapter of A=
lpha Phi Omega has concluded operations. Would it be possible for a member =
of your team to do a brief interview with The Tech about the circumstances =
leading to this decision? If so, I will be available before 11 a.m. or betw=
een 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, any time on Saturday, or after 4 p.m. on Sunday. =
Please let me know. Additionally, if you know of any APO alumni who may be =
willing to speak about the history and significance of APO, please put me i=
n touch.

Thanks,

Rujul Gandhi
