Apologies if this is not the right place to ask this question, but it
does seem to me to have to do with www security, in a broader sense.
Can anyone please point me to work being done on the issue of information
identifiers, relating to ownership of intellectual property?
As I understand the idea (and this could be wrong), a copyright item
would be placed on the net encoded in some way so that the copyright
ownership was clearly identifiable, no matter how small a (decodable)
slice of the item you take.
This idea would be anathema to many on the net, and would need very
careful analysis in relation to the copyright issues of fair dealing, etc
which allow unpaid access to copyright materials in other contexts. It
might also violate some countries encryption laws. It's been suggested
that the idea will progress at a G7 meeting in Brussels next month, but I
doubt the civil servants attending will understand the nature of what they
are dealing with.
The web is an obvious place where such ideas would need support. I'm
trying to find any discussion list, or individuals who may be developing
these ideas. I have come across them from conversations with a couple of
non-net individuals, but I'd like to see a wider discussion. The only
other reference I've seen was a wonderful spoof article (or so it appeared
:-) on USENET somewhere.
