Once upon a time, David Coe told me this tale:

I don't mind the posts as much as all the noise they generate (ie the
kind of stuff you and I are posting now). I could much more easily
ignore one or two off color posts than the 50 off topic messages that
follow. I have no problem with anonymous emailers, but I do have a
problem with the 12 years olds with crayons scribbling their juvenile
grafitti (sp?) in inappropriate places. It won't ruin my life or any-
thing, it is just another aggravation.
I do prefer a moderated group, but I am not willing to ask others to do
something that I am not willing to do myself (ie moderate this group).
If we can get somebody to moderate the group, that would be great.
If we make it so that only subscribers can post, it is still possible
for inappropriate postings to make it in. If I wanted to do it, I
would subscribe, then post. Of course, if we do it right (ie have to
mail a receipt back, which MUST be replied to), we can make it difficult
for the real newbies, but some people will eventually get around it.
Even with a moderated group, somebody will probably find a way around
the moderator, but I believe that moderation is the best option (provided
somebody else does the work, of course ;-).
