Keep getting the error 407

I am sure this might have been umpteen times but somehow I can not figure out.
I want to contact my proxy running on the same machine as the browser but when I
go to the proxy, it gives the following error :
HTTP/1.1 407 Proxy Authentication Required
but then I thought that my browser should prompt me with the username
and password but it is not doing that either. Any idea what is going on
or what configuration I need to do so that browser sends the authentication
information to the proxy.
