I'm product manager for Microsoft Merchant System (MMS) and I just want
to clarify the status of our product. MMS went to beta on August 5th.
As part of the beta program we held a training session for over 175
organizations, including leading retailers, systems integrators,
Internet service providers and independent software vendors. We are
adding additional sites daily to the beta. The product is here today
and is being used by these companies to develop Internet retailing
sites. We plan to release a second beta version of the software shortly
and are on target for our Q4 '96 RTM.

As part of the product we are integrating VeriFone's vPOS software.
vPOS will ship with the product and is currently available on the beta
CD. The inclusion of vPOS represents the first time that vPOS code has
been fully integrated into a commercial Internet retailing application.
For example, we provide an integrated setup of vPOS as part of the MMS
setup. Verifone has very definite plans to incorporate the SET credit
card standard as part of vPOS.

Additional information on MMS can be found at
http://www.microsoft.com/ecommerce. Any inquiries regarding the beta
program should be sent to merchm@microsoft.com. For additional
information on vPOS, see http://icd.verifone.com/products/merchant.html.
