Really! Frankly, I'm surprised that such obviously intelligent people can be
spewing such blatantly ignorant commentary...
I would agree that the media doesn't always get the story straight or the facts
perfect. And I did think that NYT piece left MUCH to be desired. But, as a
member of the press, I can tell you it aint an easy task to become an expert on
something incredibly complex and confusing in what often amounts to a week's
time under painfully tight deadline while juggling four other stories of
equally difficult content at the same time and get everything perfect. I'm not
excusing errors or laziness or the mishandling of information. But I am asking
the more critical of you to recognize that the press, for all its shortcomings,
is still largely responsible for getting issues out to the public for
education, for discussion and also, for criticism by those who disagree with a
point of view or those who simply know more. Some of us are still idealists and
some of us still do our absolute best to get to the truth. Some publications
clearly outshine others in that regard, but to group us all together under one
insulting heading is...well...stupid.
