It's also interesting how language helps form perception. Long ago, a
professor of German took me to task for describing spicy food as "hei=C3=9F=
"
("hot"), instead of "w=C3=BCrzig" ("spicy").(The word "scharf" didn't come =
up
then, though it would have been helpful as a cognate to "sharp" as in
cheese.)

It's difficult to shake off the way you perceive sensations due to the
language you are accustomed to using! But new language can also permit new
perceptions. Many English speakers now notice the flavor "umami."
