Just to follow up on this, a few lurkers did reply to me, off-list.
It seems that beginners find the mailing list intimidating, but have
found other forums where beginners get more one-on-one help. There
are apparently many small pockets of speakers of various skills, who
form their own cliques and write to and for each other in Klingon.
It's a bit of a pity, I suppose, that their writings are either not
public or not easily found, and won't be archived for posterity on
this mailing list.
