IIRC many of the Trek novels refer to a "sonic shower" - developed presumab=
ly to conserve potable water on long voyages. In fact, I thinks this was a=
lso a way to wash one's uniform (while wearing it even?) in the pre-replica=
tor era.

y works to get clean as well as dirty.
