In the sense of "Cover me!" during a fire fight, how about {Qan} "protect", which can refer to people:

  Qang yIQan
  [Protect the Chancellor! (untranslated)] ST6

  Qang QanmeH yan 'ISletlh Damuv 'e' wIvlu'.
  You are chosen to serve on the Yan-Isleth and protect
  the chancellor.  ('u'-MKE)

or things (body parts):

  ghop luQan tajHommey
  [the blades] providing both a hand guard... SP2

{yoD} "shield" might work metaphorically:

KGT 67: The verb form of "shield" is also {yoD}, and to "shield oneself" is {yoD'egh}... To shield a ship, one must activate the shields, or {botjan chu'}

On the BoP Poster, a {QanwI'} "guard" refers to protective armor plating: {tal QanwI'} "cannon guard".
