They may be able to begin themselves.  E.g.

  taghbej mu'qaD veS 
  Curse-warfare has definitely begun. PK 

However, {tagh} "begin a process" can take an object:

  Qu' DataghDI' 'aqtu' mellota' je yIqaw 
  When you begin a mission, remember Aktuh and Mellota. TKW
