I would say, based on what you've posted,  that the novel is accurate.  It
looks like the actors might not have been coached on the pronunciation.
{bIyem'a'} comes out "by-yem!!!"...."aaaaa" without the rise in pitch (and
as two distinct words with a dramatic pause in between).  I can see {Quj}
being pronounced {Quij} by an English speaker.
