I grow ever closer to agreeing with Ken on this issue. But I'm gonna make him
post at least one more message on the subject {{:-)
I am in complete harmony with his take on the meaning and range of -ghach. In
truth, it was this same range of meaning which I was willing to apply to the
derived nouns in question. I think he's made the point that there are sufficie
nt
examples of explicit verb/noun pairs which fall outside that meaning-range to
prompt the conclusion that we don't have enough to go on to derive.
So, Ken, I have one more question for you: You seem to be saying that it is
kosher to apply -ghach to a simple verb, though the dict is a little vague on
this. This would certainly be *my* take; we have no other example of a suffix
being restricted to only certain verb forms (even though certain combinations
might have no sensible semantic meaning). If we can agree that we can always
put -ghach on any verb to get that meaning of -ness, then I'll go along with
you on the derived ones.
