Origin of "Ferengi"

A while back on rec.arts.startrek, there was a discussion on the origin of the
name "Ferengi." Seems that words like "firangi" mean "stranger" in various
Indian languages, but then someone said that someone who had been involved with
the creation of the name had told him that it was derived as follows: Fer
(iron) + Eng (English) + i (ending for race/culture, e. g. Israeli).
Explanation: Like the English, the Ferengi are rigid (like iron) about their
culture. Dunno, to me it sounds more like Klingons...
