Here's a little tidbit for you all I picked up from Mr. Okrand regarding
vulqangan Hol. I think I mentioned this once before, but it was a long
time ago so probably many of you haven't seen it.
In ST:TMP, the vulcan scene was originally shot in English. Then, after
it was all done, someone got the idea of using real vulcan language with
subtitles. Problem was, they'd already shot the scene. So what they
ended up doing was bringing in a linguist (not Okrand) who's job it was
to devise a vulcan-sounding "language" where all the words would *look*
the same-- so that they could use the film they'd already shot and just
dub in the sound. Thus, for instance, if the English word had a 'p', the
vulcan might have a 'b', since the sounds *look* the same. Then, for the
subtitles, they simply used the original English script. Thus, if you
rent the film and turn the volume down, you can see them speaking the
subtitles. For instance, check out "Live long and prosper." {{:-)
