Mark Shoulson gave us a list of 'assigned meanings to curses', with the purpose
of helping us to curse better, if I read his posting correctly. What follows
is my personal opinion on cursing, and, so far as I know, has no 'canon'
source, although it is the 'feel' I have gotten from my readings, etc.
It is my personal belief that the 'art' of cursing actually means making
creative desctiptive insults. Ie: veQDuj 'oH DujlIj'e'! (The fabled "Your
ship is a garbage scow!"). So to me, 'swear words' (in Hol'e', at least {{:) )
are superficially... probably, they are clipped forms of some great insult that
someone in the past came up with, and either used frequently enough (and it was
clever enough) that others started to copy it, or said in a famous setting,
where again, people re-telling the story found it most appropriate/clever, and
copied it. (this could also explain some of the 'strange translations' of some
of the curse words).
For example, if I really wanted to insult someone, I would just say:
toyqangwI''a'! ("Willing slave!") or better still, my personal favourite
creation: ghargh SepHa' SoHtaH!
