This morning, walking to work, I noticed a car turning around in the =
street and doing a really bad job of it. I thought, =E2=80=9CWhy is he =
driving like that?=E2=80=9D
Then, as I often do when talking to myself like that, I thought about =
how I=E2=80=99d say it in Klingon=E2=80=A6
=E2=80=A6 until I realized that I don=E2=80=99t know how to say it in =
Klingon. At least not as an equivalent question. I can obviously stretch =
the verb =E2=80=9Cpilot=E2=80=9D to say {qatlh =E2=80=98orlI=E2=80=99=E2=80=
=A6} and then I don=E2=80=99t know how to say, =E2=80=9Clike that.=E2=80=9D=
I considered saying {Huj =E2=80=98orlI=E2=80=99ghach.} I could even turn =
it into a question. {qatlh Huj =E2=80=98orlI=E2=80=99ghach?}
Suddenly, I realized that there=E2=80=99s a relationship between =
adjectives and adverbs that can massively expand Klingon vocabulary in =
the area of adverbs. We don=E2=80=99t have a lot of them. We can=E2=80=99t=
say, for example, =E2=80=9CHe is walking weirdly.=E2=80=9D But we can =
say {taQ yItlI=E2=80=99ghach.}
We don=E2=80=99t have an equivalent mechanism for turning nouns into =
verbs, so we can=E2=80=99t use adverbs like {nom} or {QIt} to describe a =
fast car or a slow computer. We can fall back on applying it to verbs =
describing what the noun is doing quickly or slowly, but how do I say =
=E2=80=9CI want a faster computer,=E2=80=9D? I=E2=80=99m tempted to say =
{De=E2=80=99wI=E2=80=99 vIneHbogh nom law=E2=80=99 De=E2=80=99wI=E2=80=99 =
vIghajbogh nom puS.} but that doesn=E2=80=99t work because {nom} is not =
an adjective.
nom vumlaH De=E2=80=99wI=E2=80=99 vIneghbogh =E2=80=98ach reH QIt vum =
De=E2=80=99wI=E2=80=99wIj.
Well, that assumes that we can use two adverbs on one verb, and we =
don=E2=80=99t really have license to do that. I guess I could say:
nom vumlaH De=E2=80=99wI=E2=80=99 vIneHbogh =E2=80=98ach QIt vumtaH =
De=E2=80=99wI=E2=80=99wIj.
It works, but it=E2=80=99s kind of sad.
Or =E2=80=9CWe need our fastest runner to deliver this message.=E2=80=9D
{QInvam wIHIjnIS. qetchu=E2=80=99 =E2=80=98Iv?}
Weak, but I guess it works.
