Pine and ISO 8859-1 charset

I sometimes receive email that pine and other mail readers cannot display
because it uses the ISO 8859-1 (Latin-1) charset. I can read these
messages with the mail command, however. Is this related to the
/etc/mime.types file? What do I need to do so pine can display these ISO
8859-1 messages?
